Legionellosis is a collective term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria including the most serious Legionnaires’ disease. The term also describes the similar but less serious conditions of Pontiac fever and Lochgoilhead fever. Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection. (The Health and Safety Executive).

The key is to minimise the chance of people within the workplace contracting this potentially fatal disease. Building owners are responsible for their work premises under the Health and Safety Act 1974. However, a simple Legionella risk assessment can highlight any potential risks and actions needed to remain safe and compliant.

Legionella Testing

Legionella testing is a critical component of water management and public health. It focuses on the detection of Legionella bacteria, specifically Legionella pneumophila, in various water sources. Legionella is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, and Pontiac fever, a milder flu-like illness. Testing for Legionella is essential to ensure the safety of water systems and prevent outbreaks.

Building owners must carry out risk assessment of the property or premises that assesses the risk of exposure to Legionella. We can make them aware of what Legionella is, what systems are hazardous and which are low-risk.

The HSE’s Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L8 is a guideline document for the prevention and control of legionellosis in water systems. It has a special legal status by which the employer can be prosecuted, fined or even imprisoned. This is after if it is proved that you did not follow the relevant provisions of the Code.

PTSG’s risk assessment follows the guidance set out in BSEN 8580:2010. The BSEN 8580:2010 gives recommendations on the assessment of the risk of legionellosis presented by artificial water systems. The assessment will conclude on the condition of plant and advise you of any remediation necessary in order to reduce the risk from Legionella bacteria.
